The Eisriesenwelt

High above the Salzach Valley, the world’s largest ice cave opens up in the Tennengebirge
mountains. We look beyond the ice formations to the discovery, science and the people
who have explored and unravelled this fascinating world of ice and rock.

The Gods in the Eternal Ice

When Alexander von Mörk ventured into the darkness more than a century ago, he discovered chambers of such immense scale that only the language of Norse mythology seemed adequate to describe them. Hymir’s Castle, Frigg’s Veil, Odin’s Hall – he named the ice formations after the gods of the Edda. That is why visitors to the Eisriesenwelt encounter not just ice, but a landscape that its early explorers believed belonged to the realm of the gods.
