Getting there by car
A 5-kilometer, paved access road (toll-free) leads from the town of Werfen to the parking spaces at the Eisriesenwelt visitor’s center.
It is possible that the parking spaces may be filled on just a few days during the year, especially during the months of July/August, on rainy days or at mid-day. This may lead to bulk admissions on the road or a temporary road block. In such a case we recommend either the postponement of the Eisriesenwelt tour or taking buses operated by the local public bus company (see below) from Werfen.
This bus transfer from Werfen (see below) is also available for drivers who are inexperienced or feel uncomfortable navigating mountain roads.
Getting there by RV
Although it is permitted to access the mountain road to the Eisriesenwelt visitor’s center by RV, we advise against it due to the steep incline of the road. Parking in the lot near the departure point of the local bus service (see below) is free of charge to bus passengers.
Getting there by motorcycle
Motorcyclists are always thrilled to ride along the windy / twisting access road. However, please take all the necessary precautions and be considerate! The visitor’s center offers a separate motorcycle parking area and storage spaces (lockers) for helmets.
Getting there by bicycle
Bicycles and unnecessary baggage can be stored at the bus departure point in Werfen, directly at the access road. The bus shuttle service (see below) will take you directly to the Eisriesenwelt parking space / visitor’s center from here.
Getting there by tour bus
Buses (except those with an excessive length of more than 14 meters) can travel along almost the entire mountain road on two lanes. The road has a length of 5 kilometers and an incline of up to 21%.
During periods of heavy traffic, some areas require extra caution with two-way traffic. A large turnaround area and many bus parking spaces are located shortly before the visitor’s center.
Getting there by train
You can reach the Eisriesenwelt from the Werfen railway station by train.
Click here for the Austrian Federal Railway schedule. A local bus system (see below) operates a direct shuttle service from here to the Eisriesenwelt parking area / visitor’s center each day at 8:18 a.m., 10:18 a.m., 12:18 p.m. and 2:18 p.m.
In addition to these directly connecting shuttles, you can reach the departure point of the bus shuttle service on foot in about 5 minutes, from where the bus (see below) operates each day at intervals of about 25 minutes.
Note for travelers with backpacks:
Baggage/backpacks can be stored at the departure point of the bus shuttle service (see below) depending on the available spaces. The storage of baggage is also possible at the visitor’s center upon request. However, please note that we are unable to assume any responsibility for your items and will not be held liable for the storage.
Hikers
Marked hiking trails to the Eisriesenwelt are available from both Werfen and Tenneck. The ascent from the valley to the aerial cable car will take about 1 1/2 or 2 hours. If you also intend to hike the cable car route (exposed mountain trail - only for people with experience!), you should plan for additional ascent time of about 1 1/2 hours.
Note: The footpath from the cable car’s valley station to the summit station is a secured Alpine climbing trail in an exposed location. You will need to be free of vertigo and have good hiking equipment! Please contact us if you have any specific requests or questions!
Local bus and bus shuttle service
The bus transport from Werfen to the Eisriesenwelt parking area / visitor’s center is available to you several times a day. The public bus always leaves the Werfen railway station at 8:18 a.m., 10:18 a.m., 12:18 p.m. and 2:18 p.m. Outside of these times, a transfer is offered from the bus departure point at Gries (about 5 minutes on foot from the railway station) directly at the access road to the Eisriesenwelt at intervals of about 25 minutes.
We recommend that tour groups make advance reservations. The descents from the visitor’s center also leave at intervals of about 25 minutes; the last descent departs at 5:32 p.m. (6:32 p.m. in July and August).
If needed, the last descent will leave according to the day’s schedule - all visitors from the final cave tour of the day will be able to catch a secure ride into the valley. You can view and print the rates and additional information by downloading the information sheet.
